Background: True conch species are salt water snails which vary in size from small to very large.

Most species live on warm sandy bottoms in tropical waters in Indo-Pacific Oceans, and many are economically important as food sources.

The animal inside the shell is eaten, either raw like oysters, steamed or stir fried.

Conch Shells in History: In Mayan art large conch shells were used as paint and ink holders for scribes, as bugles and hand weapons.

Ecological Note: The large pink Queen Conch ( Strombus gigas) is included on CITES list of endangered species. These shells are often sold whole or as jewellery to tourists in the Caribbean but constitute one of the most frequently confiscated items by UK customs.

Classification: Strombus urceus Linne
